# Battle Stakes Intro

Battle Stakes is an innovative DeFi protocol that is designed to be a hybrid of a staking protocol and a play-to-earn project which enables its users to earn rewards in 3 different ways. This will include payouts in US Dollars / stable coins, rewards in a native coin to the protocol $GEN, and $ARENA token – a token designed to increase in value as the battle stakes network grows.

$GEN only provides interest while participants “battle” or stake their $GEN directly against each other. <mark style="color:red;">If your $GEN is not in a battle it does not earn any interest</mark>. Proposing a battle (while not engaged) does not equate to being in a battle.
